Evangelical churches affirm that when the Bible was written, its writers were “inspired” by the Holy Spirit. The Bible itself attests to this in passages such as 2 Peter 1:19-21 and 1 Cor 2:9-13. If Scripture is inspired by God, then it follows that it is also accurate and the intended meaning can be fully relied upon.
Even though the Bible’s writers were inspired by the Holy Spirit, they retained their own writing characteristics as can be seen by the different writing styles and varying accounts of the same events.
Most evangelical denominations have, as one of their doctrines, a statement affirming the inspiration and reliability of Scripture as the authority on which Christian faith and life is based.
The approach adopted throughout this website is that, although the Bible has been written by human authors, its authors were inspired and wrote under the supernatural influence of the Holy Spirit. As such the writings are accurate and their intended meaning can be relied upon just as if God himself was speaking. All topics and discussions are on this understanding.
Postscript: There are a range of views in Christian circles regarding just how reliable the Bible is. This has been the subject of debate for many Bible scholars over the years, particularly since the Age of Reason. Even within Christian denominations today, views range from liberal to conservative. There are different rational arguments (biblical criticisms) regarding Scripture, but discussion of these criticisms contributes little towards discovering what it is that God, through his Spirit, want us to hear through His word.
