The Bible comprises 66 separate books that were written thousands of years ago. These books are divided into 2 sections, the Old & New Testaments (or Covenants). The Old Testament relates to events prior to the birth of Jesus Christ.
A quick search on the internet will reveal a number of different descriptions of the Bible. These include the Bible being “a collection of religious texts”, a foundational book for the Christian faith”, “a history of the Earth from its earliest times” ……..
However, a more appropriate description is that it is the “word” of the one true God, the creator of our world in which humankind has a special place. It tells of the restoration of the relationship between humankind and the Creator. As we read, the Bible reveals important truths about what God is like.
Perhaps a good description of the Bible is that it is a written record of what God has revealed about himself and his plans for humankind.
Postscript: Some modern ways of thinking have emerged, particularly over the past 400 years, that lead many to put their faith in the abilities and achievements of humankind rather than in an all-powerful God. The above description of the Bible does not sit comfortably with those who have closed their minds to the existence of an all-powerful supernatural God.
